Football prediction glossary: key terms explained

Prediction games are simple, but they come with a bit of jargon. This glossary explains the terms you'll actually meet on Pickz, in plain English, with links to the pages that go deeper. For the definitive point values, the rules page is always the source of truth.

Pick

Your prediction for a single fixture — the scoreline you're backing, like 2–1. It's the basic unit of the whole game (and where the name Pickz comes from). You can change a Pick as often as you like until its deadline.

Correct result

Getting the outcome right — home win, away win or draw — without necessarily nailing the scoreline. Worth 1 point on Pickz.

Exact score

Predicting the precise scoreline. Harder than the result alone and worth more — 3 points on Pickz. Exact scores are usually where leagues are won; our score prediction strategy guide is about hunting them intelligently.

Bonus Team

Your chosen team — usually the club you support — set on your profile. Matches involving them are worth extra: a correct result is worth 3 points in total and an exact score 8 in total. The bonus is added on top of the standard points — it doesn't multiply them.

Gameweek

One round of league fixtures — in the Premier League, usually ten matches, 38 gameweeks a season. Gameweeks are the heartbeat of Prem Pickz: each one crowns its own gameweek winner before everything rolls into the season standings.

Deadline

The cut-off for locking in a Pick. On Pickz every Pick locks one hour before that fixture kicks off — each match has its own deadline, so there's no single cut-off to miss for a whole round. Until the deadline you can change your mind freely; after it, the Pick is set.

Leaderboard

The live table of everyone's points. You're ranked on the global leaderboard against every player in the competition, and separately within any private leagues you've joined.

Private league

A league you create for your own group — mates, office, family. Everyone predicts the same fixtures and competes on a private leaderboard for bragging rights. Setting one up is free: see how prediction leagues work.

Invite code

How people join your private league — share the league's code or invite link and anyone with it lands directly in your league. No spreadsheets, no admin.

Stage multiplier (tournament-only)

Strictly a tournament rule: in knockout competitions like the World Cup on Pickz, points step up round by round from the group stage to the final. Prem Pickz league scoring doesn't use multipliers — every gameweek scores the same.

Tournament picks

Longer-range tournament calls — group winners, finalists and your overall champion — locked in early for bonus points if they come good. A tournament feature; league competitions score fixture by fixture.

Auto-Fill (tournament-only)

Strictly a tournament rule: in knockout competitions like the World Cup on Pickz, blanks left at the tournament deadline can be filled in automatically (clearly marked as auto-filled). Premier League Pickz has no Auto-Fill — the Randomise button can suggest scores, but you review them and press Save yourself; missing predictions simply score nothing.

Head-to-head (H2H)

The record between two teams across their past meetings — useful context when a fixture looks close. Pickz publishes head-to-head pages for Premier League match-ups alongside its guides.
